Chennai: Passengers using Singara Chennai National Common Mobility Cards (NCMC) can now recharge their cards, update balances, and check available amounts on electronic ticketing machines (ETMs) by approaching MTC bus conductors.
The move follows a TOI report on Oct 22 highlighting the difficulties Chennai Metro Rail commuters face in checking their card balances. In a circular, the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) directed all branch managers to ensure conductors assist passengers whenever requested. The Singara Chennai NCMC card can be used to buy MTC bus and metro rail tickets, allowing commuters to travel with a single mobility card instead of buying separate tickets for each mode of transport.
MTC has directed branch managers to explain the procedure to all conductors, obtain their signatures confirming they understood the instructions, and forward the signed documents to the projects department. Conductors must select the ‘NCMC recharge’ option from the ETM’s main menu, enter the amount received from the passenger, and complete the transaction, according to the circular. They must then select ‘balance update’ to update the card before returning it to the passenger. Conductors must update cards recharged online when passengers request assistance. ‘Balance update’ option must also be used to check the available balance. Download the TOI App.
