Kolkata: Three youths allegedly attacked a traffic sergeant and stopped other officers from discharging their duties during a helmet-checking drive at Hastings crossing around 9.45 pm on Wednesday.
The arrested men — Kidderpore residents Sakir Hossain, Amankumar Sahu and Musharaf Hussain — were sent to judicial custody until Oct 31.
Police said officers at the naka signalled two youths riding without helmets to stop. But the riders sped towards the officers instead. The cops managed to jump aside, but the bike skidded and fell. The youths fled the spot. A short time later, three youths returned to the spot and allegedly became aggressive towards the officers before grabbing a sergeant by his collar and assaulting him. They also allegedly tried to snatch cops’ body cameras. The injured sergeant needed basic medical treatment. Other cops intervened and detained the trio. They were later arrested.
