A day before the Simhastha Dhwajarohan (flag-hoisting) ceremony, water was once again seen flowing through Ramkund and the Godavari riverbed in the city on Friday after nearly three months
The water resources department (WRD) released water from Gangapur dam at the rate of 300 cusecs early Friday at 12.30 am as part of water rotation for the Eklahare thermal power station. The release brought water back to Ramkund at a significant time, just a day before the Dhwajarohan ceremony scheduled for Saturday, which is an important ceremonial milestone for Nashik and Trimbakeshwar ahead of the 2027 Kumbh Mela. WRD officials, however, clarified that the release was not specifically for the Dhwajarohan ceremony but for the department’s Eklahare thermal power station water rotation, and Ramkund and Tapovan happen to fall along the downstream course of the released water. The department also issued an advisory ahead of the release and officials appealed to citizens to remove cattle or any other material from the riverbed and remain alert during the discharge. After release from the dam, water flows downstream through the Godavari stretch in Nashik city, passing through Ramkund and Tapovan before proceeding towards Eklahare. Ramkund, Laxmankund and adjoining stretches of the Godavari riverbed and ghats were largely dry since Aug after water flow was curtailed to facilitate Kumbh-related works. The release timing nevertheless coincided with preparations for Saturday’s ceremony at Ramkund, where the Simhastha flag will be hoisted. The presence of flowing water at Ramkund is particularly significant, as the riverfront is set to be one of the focal points of Saturday’s Dhwajarohan ceremony. Download the TOI App.
