Pune: A 49-year-old resident of Undri lost Rs 11.25 lakh to a fraudster posing as a piped gas company employee, who tricked him into downloading a malicious file on a mobile phone on Oct 27.

A Kalepadal police officer said the complainant received a call from an unknown number. The caller, who claimed to represent a piped gas company, said the complainant had not paid his bill and faced disconnection. “We have sought details of the transactions from the complainant’s bank,” the officer said.
The man subsequently approached the police and lodged a complaint. Download the TOI App.
The caller then told him to download a “mandatory” APK file and enter details of his bank account, user ID and passwords. “After that, he received three OTPs and Rs 11.25 lakh was debited from his bank account,” the officer said.
