An injured labourer being evacuated from the accident site Friday An injured labourer being evacuated from the accident site Friday Nagpur: A crane operator and a labourer were killed on Friday and three others injured after a tower crane collapsed after colliding with a stationary one at a construction site in Ganeshpeth, when workers were raising the height of the 100-foot-tall crane, said police. The impact tossed the labourer 100 feet in the air before crashing to the ground, while crane operator fell from 60 feet. Talking to TOI, DCP Rahul Madane confirmed the accident occurred when the crane’s height was being raised and its arm collided with another crane, causing it to tear away and collapse at the MHADA construction site.
The exact sequence of events and cause of collapse are being investigated. The accident triggered an emergency response with Ganeshpeth police and fire department personnel rushing to the spot. One worker, Manturam, was trapped in the upper section of the crane and fire personnel climbed onto the crane to reach the stranded worker. They brought him down with a stretcher and shifted to a hospital by ambulance. Ganeshpeth police were conducting a ‘panchnama’ and examining the circumstances surrounding the accident. No offence had been registered at the time of filing this report. Police sources say the contractor is likely to be named in an FIR for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
