Row over right turn at junction
Chennai: A 39-year-old civil engineer was arrested on Friday night two day for assaulting a traffic police head constable on duty after an argument over a right turn near Raja Mannar Salai in KK Nagar on 100 Feet Road in Ashok Nagar. Prakash , of Mangadu, was driving an SUV and attempted to turn right at the signal around 7.40pm on Oct 29, police said. Sub-inspectors Mahalingam and Muruganantham traced Prakash through the vehicle’s registration number and brought him to the station for questioning on Friday. He was produced before the 17th Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Saidapet and granted bail, subject to payment of a fine of ₹10,000 and signing at the police station for 15 days.
Because right turns were prohibited at the junction, head constable Bhuvaneshwaran, 36, attached to the Ashok Nagar traffic police station, directed him to proceed further and take a U-turn.
Prakash refused to move, obstructing traffic, police said. When Bhuvaneshwaran began recording the incident on his mobile phone, Prakash questioned him, snatched the phone and verbally abused him. He then grabbed the head constable’s uniform and assaulted him, leaving abrasions on his right arm. With help from members of the public, the police personnel moved the SUV to the roadside. Prakash returned the phone and drove away. Bhuvaneshwaran alerted the police control room and sought treatment at KK Nagar Govt Hospital before lodging a complaint at the Ashok Nagar police station.
