Kolkata: Jadavpur University (JU) has managed to attract students, who are among the top-50 WBJEE rank-holders under the general category, for admissions into some of its BTech engineering programmes. Last year, none of the students, who ranked in the top 50 had opted for any engineering department at JU. “JU has been able to attract students who ranked in the top 50 this year.
Because the WBJEE admission process and counselling started early this year, around May and June, the opening ranks of students in various departments have improved compared to last year. Last year, due to OBC-related complications, WBJEE centralised counselling had started around Sept,” said a senior professor. The best WBJEE-ranked among the JU admission-takers this year—18th—has opted for the civil engineering course. Thus, better WBJEE-rank holders may have opted for other institutes.
In 2025, the opening ranks for these courses were 554 and 833 respectively. In electronics and telecommunication engineering, a student, who ranked 92, has also sought admission. Last year, the opening rank for computer science and engineering was 83. Last year, for electronics and telecommunication, it was 274 and for information technology, it was 295. JU has 16 engineering departments and top WBJEE rank-holders have showed interest for most of these departments this year. The chemical engineering department also recorded an improvement in the opening rank at 782, which was 1,226 in 2025. After several rounds of counselling conducted by the WBJEE board that ended early Oct, JU had 182 vacant seats out of 1,190 seats. Sources said JU had filled all the seats during the decentralised counselling and spot admission conducted by the university between Oct 28 and Oct 30 (Wednesday to Friday).
But another professor pointed out that despite an early start, the closing ranks of students in some departments have been more or less similar to that of last year due to the procedural delays by the WBJEE board in conducting counselling. Moreover, due to a delayed process, classes began late in Oct, whereas IITs and NITs had already started their classes in July. ”
“We could have had more better-ranking students if the board had wrapped the counselling session faster,” said the professor. Computer science and engineering department professor, Diganta Saha, said, “This year, our department got students with better ranks compared to the previous year. The opening and closing ranks of students opting for the course offered by our department has also improved. But if the counselling was conducted faster, we would have been able to attract even better-ranking students.
