The deceased were Mokshay Charan (20) of Upparapally and D Yashwant (20) of Balkampet, both third year students of a private engineering college under the limits of Moinabad police station. A patrol team on routine night duty along the Moinabad-Peddamangalaram road around 2 am noticed several two-wheelers parked by the roadside and a group of youngsters sitting in adjacent fields, according to police. Police registered a case under Section 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita against the farmer.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the wire had been laid around nearly half an acre of paddy field and connected to a power source to ward off wild animals. The tragedy took place when the students spotted a police patrolling vehicle and tried to flee by running across fields. The students were among a group of friends who had gathered in the area after a birthday celebration. On noticing the police vehicle, some of the students allegedly panicked and attempted to leave the spot. The other students immediately alerted the nearby police patrol team, which rushed to the spot. The accused is yet to be arrested.
