Nagpur: Land acquisition for the ambitious New Nagpur project has gathered momentum, with the Nagpur Metropolitan Region Development Authority (NMRDA) acquiring 893 acres through direct purchase and distributing Rs2,160 crore among farmers as compensation. another 165 farmers owning around 600 acres are yet to agree to govt’s proposal While 202 farmers have come forward to surrender their land. Following several rounds of discussions, a meeting chaired by guardian minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule decided to offer compensation at five times the ready reckoner rate, along with a 1,500 square foot developed plot for every acre surrendered. However, despite the enhanced compensation package, acquisition of the remaining 600 acres continues to be a challenge. NMRDA officials said efforts are underway to persuade the remaining 165 farmers to voluntarily surrender their land. The acquisition would be carried out under Section 19 of the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013.
Earlier, the authority had announced that the five-times compensation package would remain available only until September-end. However, to encourage greater participation, the offer has been extended, although no fresh deadline has been announced. Farmers whose land is acquired through this route would also lose the additional benefits offered under the direct purchase scheme.
