Nagpur: Former Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh has urged the governor to intervene and ensure the public release of the Justice Chandiwal Commission report on the Rs100 crore extortion allegations against him. Deshmukh warned of approaching the court if the state govt failed to disclose its findings.
Deshmukh said the commission, headed by retired Justice Chandiwal, conducted a 13-month inquiry and submitted its nearly 1,400-page report to the state govt around four years ago. Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis hasn’t responded to around 15 letters sent by him, Deshmukh claimed. On preparations for the Nashik Kumbh Mela, Deshmukh alleged irregularities in projects involving expenditure of Rs35,000 crore to Rs40,000 crore and sought an inquiry into complaints by locals over the quality of work and alleged corruption.
But if the allegations have not been proved, that too should be made public,” Deshmukh said, demanding that the report be released during the upcoming legislative session. Referring to the Nagpur graduates’ constituency election, Deshmukh said votes secured by Nitesh Karale reflected support for Maha Vikas Aghadi’s ideology, while second-preference votes helped Abhijeet Wanjarri emerge victorious. “I have no objection if the report establishes the allegations against me. Let me face the consequences. He also accused the BJP and Shiv Sena of lacking coordination despite sharing power in Maharashtra, claiming that mutual distrust between the allies had affected their electoral performance. Deshmukh further alleged growing public resentment against the BJP, citing social media criticism of its leaders. He also urged the state govt to prioritise drought relief and assistance to distressed farmers over expensive infrastructure projects, including the proposed Shaktipeeth expressway.
