University of Mumbai vice-chancellor Ravindra Kulkarni said the collaboration would particularly benefit coastal communities in Mumbai, Palghar, Ratnagiri and Vengurla by strengthening their ability to respond to climate change and natural disasters. The partnership aims to reduce disaster risks, improve response mechanisms and develop effective measures to address emerging environmental challenges.

MUMBAI: Strengthening early warning systems and disaster preparedness along Maharashtra’s 720km coastline will be the focus of a joint research centre planned by the University of Mumbai and the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), Hyderabad. The initiative is expected to create new opportunities in marine science and technology in Maharashtra by combining the university’s academic and research capabilities with INCOIS’s expertise in ocean information services. It will also contribute to coastal protection, sustainable marine resource management and India’s Blue Economy.
