Mangaluru: A team led by Dr Praveen Kumar CH, the designated officer for food safety in Dakshina Kannada district, inspected units across the district that make ice used to preserve raw fish, on the orders of health minister UT Khader.
Officials collected ice samples from plants in the Mangaluru jetty area in Bunder. Officials observed that the units were buying tanker-supplied fresh water to make ice. Operators were instructed to make ice only after obtaining official laboratory test reports confirming water quality. The food safety department directed all operators to implement strict precautionary measures and use only ice made from high-quality water to preserve fresh, clean and quality fish. It also issued a strict warning against using formalin or any other chemicals to preserve fish.
