Dr Anupam Dwivedi, senior medical officer, said people should maintain a balanced diet during the festive season. He said three key principles for healthy festive eating are planning meals in advance, enjoying small portions and staying physically active. Dr Prashasti Tripathi, a dietitian at Kamala Nehru Memorial Hospital, said a healthy routine should include at least three servings of vegetables and two servings of fruits daily. “People should also make it a habit to read food labels while purchasing packaged items and choose products low in saturated fats, added sugars and sodium,” she said.

These habits can help people stay fit while enjoying the festivities. To optimise daily nutrition, individuals should prioritise a substantial breakfast rich in proteins and whole grains, pair carbohydrates with proteins at every major meal, use iodised salt unless medically advised otherwise, and include fermented foods in their diet to promote gut health.
