Ahmedabad: Two men, allegedly posing as journalists, filmed women in hotel rooms and demanded Rs 5 lakh to not circulate the footage. Ahmedabad city police’s Mahila Cell is investigating the matter.
The accused used bogus media identities, including the name ‘Star New 7’ as a cover for their alleged activities. The two have a case of extortion registered against them at Gujarat University police station, filed in 2023, and a molestation case at Satellite police station besides one in Mahuva, Bhavnagar district, according to the police.
Inspector M A Ambalia of the Mahila Crime Police said one of the victims was a Filipina. The accused are absconding, police said, adding that they entered the rooms without authorisation. Police said the accused also allegedly targeted hotels by threatening to malign the establishments’ reputation using the recordings. “Both accused claimed to be journalists on their Instagram profiles, but their activities were primarily related to extortion ,” Ambalia said.
Police are also investigating if the duo had targeted other women and hotels.
