He said the project will also beautify the entry point where vehicles from Udupi enter the city and install digital advertisement display boards on poles along the stretch to generate Smart Road maintenance revenue for the Muda. Storm drains with issues will be properly covered and repaired. Download the TOI App.
He said a detailed project report (DPR), estimated to cost Rs 5 crore, will be prepared before the next Muda board meeting on Nov 17.
Muda chairman Santhosh Kumar Shetty told TOI the project would include beautification and other improvements along the stretch. “Once developed, it will be an attractive and the longest smart road stretch in the city, where people will have all basic facilities,” Shetty said. Further, benches will be placed wherever space allows, and all bus bays will be developed for the convenience of the general public, he said, adding that standard, high-quality tiles will give the footpaths a neat finish. To properly cover the footpath areas, we will install more CCTV cameras and connect them to the integrated command and control centre developed by Mangaluru Smart City Limited (MSCL), said Shetty.
Mangaluru Urban Development Authority’s (Muda) initiative has received in-principle approval from govt to develop the 3km stretch. Providing end-to-end footpaths on both sides is the priority. At many points, the footpaths are either cut off or used for parking. We plan to use living plants as footpath railings instead of steel railings. This will give the footpath an aesthetic look. In addition, the entire footpath stretch will have lighting poles. The Smart Road project will also beautify the median. CCTV cameras are currently installed at a few spots, but they are not sufficient.
The road from Kottara Chowki to Urwa Store and from Urwa Store to Lady Hill junction was earlier converted to concrete in phases.
