Madurai : Two men, including an accused in the 2019 Lalitha Jewellery heist, were arrested for assaulting three farm workers over suspected theft of ₹7.5 lakh.
One of the workers subsequently died, though police said the cause of death was yet to be established.
A senior police officer said three workers had allegedly taken ₹7.5 lakh and concealed it on Ganesan’s farm.
Ganesan is an accused in the Lalitha Jewellery heist case, while Sridhar has a criminal record, police said. Police identified the arrested men as Ganesan, a farm owner and Sridhar . Both were remanded in judicial custody. His wife, Aachiponnu, alleged that Ganesan had repeatedly questioned her husband and other workers over money missing from his house. The officer claimed they had admitted taking the cash and promised repayment within three months. However, the money remained unpaid after two months, allegedly triggering the assault. Aachiponnu has sought police protection, alleging continuing threats to her family. Police are awaiting the postmortem report to establish the cause of death.
