Ahmedabad: Crime branch detained 61 foreign nationals, mostly from Bangladesh, during a city-wide drive against illegal immigrants ahead of Diwali . The detentions followed raids in multiple parts of the city. Police are verifying their identities and documents, while procedures for their deportation are under way.
In a previous statewide operation, police detained hundreds of suspected Bangladeshi nationals, including 166 in Ahmedabad, as part of a verification exercise. In another drive, Gujarat police had identified 362 suspected illegal Bangladeshi immigrants across the state.
