The 43-year-old was detained by US authorities on October 30, 2026, in connection with allegations of organised crime, money laundering and tax fraud. Her lawyer husband, Victor Manuel Alvarez Puga, is also accused of being involved in the operation, which investigators estimate involved around 2.95 billion pesos, or approximately £120 million.
Gomez Mont is accused of being part of an alleged criminal network that siphoned public money through a series of bogus companies and fraudulent invoices, according to Mexican news agency reports and Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office (FGR). Mexican television presenter Ines Gomez Mont, who once made headlines for asking NFL legend Tom Brady to marry her, has been arrested in Miami after spending nearly five years outside Mexico amid a massive fraud investigation. The former television host was reportedly taken into custody in Miami, Florida, where she was photographed being escorted by police officers in handcuffs. She is currently in US custody, pending immigration proceedings and any formal extradition process to Mexico. Gomez Mont and Alvarez Puga left Mexico with their family in September 2021 after arrest warrants were issued against them over the alleged financial scam.
Their arrest comes weeks after Interpol reportedly withdrew the international red notices against the pair in September 2026. Mexican investigators had located the couple in Miami as early as 2022, according to reports. However, a formal extradition request was not made until December 2025. At least 18 million pesos reportedly ended up in bank accounts belonging to Gomez Mont and her husband. The lawyer was reportedly detained by US immigration officers in Miami in 2025 over irregularities concerning his stay in the country. She has also called for cooperation from Washington, pointing to Mexico’s transfer of around 100 prisoners wanted by the Trump administration to the United States. In October 2021, shortly after the warrants were issued, she addressed the controversy in a statement shared with her 2.5 million Instagram followers. (Photo: Instagram) Apart from her television career and the ongoing fraud case, Gomez Mont was also known internationally for an unusual moment involving former NFL quarterback Tom Brady. During the 2008 Super Bowl, while reporting on the event, she famously asked Brady to marry her.
He was subsequently released, and his current whereabouts remain unclear.
Mexican prosecutors said the presenter’s arrest followed an exchange of information between Mexican and US authorities. The alleged operation is said to have involved funds from Mexico’s Ministry of the Interior during the presidency of Enrique Pena Nieto. She said she had faith that the truth would emerge and that her innocence would be established.
The couple had remained outside the country as Mexican authorities continued their investigation. Despite the removal of the notices, the arrest warrants issued in Mexico remained active. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum had criticised Interpol’s decision and maintained that her government would continue seeking the couple’s extradition. Investigators allege that the couple were connected to a network of companies that issued fraudulent invoices and created contracts for services that were never actually delivered. The money was allegedly routed through multiple bank transactions to conceal its origin. Alvarez Puga, who has been dubbed the ‘King of the Invoice Mills’, is accused of masterminding the alleged operation. Investigators have also linked him to a network of contacts involving politicians, former government officials, lawyers, businesspeople and celebrities. Gomez Mont has denied the allegations since the case came to light. Calling the allegations an injustice, she insisted that she would continue to speak out despite what she described as attempts to silence her. The presenter has not been convicted of the alleged offences. The allegations against her and her husband remain subject to legal proceedings. The football star turned down the proposal, making the exchange a memorable moment from her time covering the sporting event. Years later, the presenter has again made international headlines, this time following her arrest in the United States over the allegations linked to the multi-million-pound fraud investigation.
