Trichy : Sweet and snack makers in Trichy have recorded a 30%: The wider industry impact

The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

Trichy : Sweet and snack makers in Trichy have recorded a 30% increase in export demand this Diwali , with consignments being dispatched to the US, Singapore, Australia and Seychelles.

The exporters have bounced back from last year’s US tariff setback, although rising commodity prices have squeezed profit margins.

“We have exported about 42 MT of sweets and snacks to the US alone for this Diwali. Last year, the 50% tariff on export of sweets caused our festive sale volume to fall by a minimum of 70%.

The festive demand is best this year, but the price rise of essential commodities is affecting our profit margin,” said Aswin Ganesan, managing partner, Aswins Sweets.

Exports of sweets and snacks from Trichy to Singapore alone crossed 2.5 MT in a single day last week. Orders are good but the profit margin has come down due to inflation and competition to tap the demand,” said Saranath Rangarajan, proprietor, Sree Krishna Sweets, Trichy. Australia, which also has a sizeable Indian diaspora, is another market being tapped by Trichy sweet makers. “Besides bulk exporting under white labelling to Australia, NRIs individually place orders online, and we courier the eatables. With direct Trichy-Singapore flights offering limited cargo space, some exporters are opting for connecting flights via Colombo.
