Jewellery worth ₹7-8 lakh stolen from locked first AC coupe; Couple alleges no help despite SOS

Lucknow: A couple travelling with their one-year-old child in a First AC coach of a train has alleged that gold jewellery worth Rs 7-8 lakh and cash amounting to around Rs 35,000 were stolen from their locked coupe while the train was stationed at Lucknow’s Charbagh railway station in the early hours of Nov 2. The incident took place around 1.20am aboard train number 15726, which was travelling from Anand Vihar to Deoria. Umesh Kumar (31), his wife Sunita Kumari (30) and their toddler were travelling on berths E13 and E14 in the H1 First AC coach. The stolen ornaments, purchased during the couple’s 2023 wedding, are currently valued at Rs 7-8 lakh, she alleged. We first met police personnel at Gonda after contacting emergency helpline 112,” Umesh said. The train arrived at Charbagh at 1.15am and departed at 1.35am, according to NTES data. Umesh claimed he also contacted railway helpline 139 several times but only received complaint reference numbers.

He was sleeping on the upper berth while his wife and child were asleep below when Sunita suddenly woke up and found a man standing inside the coupe, according to Umesh. When she noticed him, he apologised, claiming he had entered the wrong coupe by mistake, and quickly walked away,” Umesh said. GRP Charbagh SHO Dharamveer Singh said police had contacted the victims and initiated an inquiry. The copy of the Zero FIR was yet to be received from Deoria, he said.

Distressed Sunita Kumari shared a video from coupe E of the H1 coach, expressing anger and disappointment over the alleged theft and lack of police response. “My wife saw a tall, heavily built man dressed in black inside the cabin. Moments later, Sunita found her purse had been rummaged through and jewellery and cash were missing. Umesh claimed police personnel at Gonda later demonstrated how the door could be opened from outside despite being internally locked. After discovering the theft, Sunita alerted the travelling ticket examiner (TTE), while the couple repeatedly pulled the alarm chain in an attempt to prevent the train from leaving Charbagh station. However, they alleged that no police personnel arrived to assist them. “Despite pulling the chain three times and making multiple calls, nobody came to help us at Charbagh. The couple later lodged a Zero FIR with GRP Deoria. Meanwhile, a video of Sunita recounting the incident has surfaced on social media, in which she expressed concern over passenger safety inside a supposedly secure First AC cabin and questioned the lack of immediate police response.
