Lucknow: High drama unfolded in Kushinagar district on Tuesday when a woman climbed a 130-metres high mobile tower at Padrahi crossing and remained perched atop for nearly 10 hours, demanding that police arrange her marriage with her boyfriend.

The woman, a resident of Mansachhapar area, climbed the tower early in the morning carrying her mobile phone, food and water supplies. Locals spotted her sitting atop the structure and alerted the police. Khadda SDM, SHO Abhinav Mishra and other police personnel rushed to the spot and tried to persuade her to climb down. The woman insisted that her boyfriend be brought before her. Police and villagers attempted to communicate with her through loudspeakers and mobile phones, but she refused to budge. During the standoff, she threw copies of her mobile phone chat conversations from the tower. She was taken into custody and booked her on a complaint filed by Katai Bharpurwa outpost in-charge Abhilash Jha. She was later produced before a court, which remanded her to judicial custody.

An FIR was registered against the man, who was arrested and later released on bail.

Local residents said the woman and a local youth had been in a relationship for three years. Three months ago, she accused him of sexually exploiting her on the promise of marriage after a dispute between the two families.
