The family of soul music legend Otis Redding has opened an $11.2 million arts centre in his hometown of Macon, Georgia, offering young people access to recording studios, songwriting rooms and musical instruments. Opened in March 2025, the centre brings together education, performance and technology under one roof, continuing the singer’s legacy while giving a new generation opportunities to explore its musical ambitions.
Experienced musicians and industry professionals are expected to teach students how to play instruments, create sheet music, write lyrics and record audio, according to the Macon Telegraph. The facility, established by the Otis Redding Foundation, provides a permanent home for the family’s longstanding efforts to introduce children to music and creative expression. The centre represents an important development for the Otis Redding Foundation, which had been running music camps and educational programmes without a permanent physical facility of its own. The foundation’s family members have continued to develop the singer’s legacy through education and community programmes. The arts centre gives those efforts a permanent base in the city where Redding’s musical journey began. The facility is intended to provide more than conventional music lessons. Students can explore songwriting, instrument playing, recording, audio mixing and the technical aspects of producing music. The centre also offers opportunities for students to work together, experiment with sounds and develop their own musical ideas.
One of its most distinctive features is the O3 Recording Studio, named in memory of Otis Redding III, the singer’s son who died in 2023. He died in a plane crash in December 1967, aged 26. The studio was designed by engineer Neils Kastor, whose previous work includes recording facilities associated with Katy Perry, P!nk and Dr Dre. Otis Redding remains one of the most influential figures in soul music. Born in Georgia, the singer became internationally recognised for his powerful voice and songs, including Respect and (Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay.
