Martinez began tutoring Brady when he was 12 and remained an important figure in his football development. For Brady, the February 23 visit was also a chance to recognise the school that helped shape his journey long before he became an NFL legend.
Speaking to the crowd during the benefit, he said, “I want tonight to be a record-breaker. “All that began here under this roof, and I’m forever grateful for that,” Brady told the audience during his keynote address. During his speech at Serra, Brady became emotional while remembering his mentor and said Martinez was present with the gathering in spirit.
Brady wanted the event to set a new fundraising record. Malak had gone on to become student body president at Menlo College after his time at Serra. His experience offered a direct example of how the Fund a Dream programme could help students pursue their education and future goals.
The February 23 fundraiser also brought back memories of the place where Brady first developed as a football player. Brady attended Junipero Serra High School and graduated in 1995. By 2012, he had become one of the NFL’s biggest names, leading the Patriots to five Super Bowl appearances. On February 23, 2012, he returned to the all-boys Catholic school for its annual Fund a Dream Scholarship Benefit. Around 800 people packed the school gym to hear him speak. The fundraiser had already generated $850,000 in student financial aid since 2005, according to contemporary reporting by The Mercury News.
He returned as the evening’s main attraction, but his contribution went beyond the attention he received as an NFL star. The money supported Serra’s Fund a Dream Scholarship Benefit, which helped families manage the cost of education. His journey there had not been straightforward. He started as a backup on the freshman team before working his way up to become a varsity football player.
