ABVP marches at DU to ‘Save Democracy’

The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

New Delhi: The RSS-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) organised a students’ march at Delhi University’s North Campus Wednesday against alleged attempts by “anarchic and anti-national forces” to destabilise the country by promoting disorder through various ongoing movements.

ABVP national general secretary Virendra Singh Solanki said criticism of govt and political dissent were integral to democracy, but alleged that attempts to create distrust in electoral processes and constitutional institutions for political gains were unfortunate. The march comes amid a series of political mobilisations and protests, including Cockroach Janta Party and opposition INDIA bloc’s agitations against alleged irregularities in Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls and for chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation. CJP also protested over irregularities in the NEET examination.

“Govts in India are formed and changed through the people’s votes, not through mob pressure or anarchy,” he said, adding that the situations in Bangladesh and Nepal could not become a model for India’s democratic future. The organisation said it had earlier held Chhatra Garjana rallies in several states. Delhi University Students’ Union president Yash Dabas, who was among the participants, said democracy allowed disagreement and dissent, but did not permit attempts to weaken constitutional institutions. ABVP Delhi secretary Sarthak Sharma said student representatives had a responsibility to strengthen healthy political discourse and democratic traditions on campuses.

The gathering was part of ABVP’s nationwide campaign against what it termed political anarchy and attempts to undermine democratic institutions.
