Shivamogga : Exactly a month after the tragic death of tusker Shourya at the Sakrebyle Elephant Camp due to septic shock from an infected leg injury, animal rights activists, local organisations, and environmental groups staged a silent protest outside the deputy conservator’s office (wildlife) in Shivamogga, demanding an independent judicial probe into the incident.

Protesters, including representatives from the Malenadu Wildlife and Cultural Foundation and Karnataka Rakshana Vedike Simhasena, tied a banner honouring Shourya to the department’s front gate, lit incense, offered prayers, and observed a one-minute silence alongside forest department staff led by activist Delip Nadig. Activist leaders expressed severe outrage over alleged recurring administrative negligence, pointing also to the recent Shivamogga Dasara ambari howdah incident involving elephant Somanna, and criticised officials for blaming the animals instead of addressing healthcare and management failures. The protesters also urged a judicial inquiry led by a sitting or retired judge into Shourya’s death and overall camp management, and administrative action against responsible forest officers.
