In 2015, Karen Russell and her brother Jacob filed a legal action against Jeannine Fiorito, their father’s partner and caregiver. Cousy was 97 at the time. Cousy also showed Karen a desk clock that Bill and Rose had gifted him and his wife in 1963, around the time Cousy was preparing to retire. During the visit, Karen spoke about her September 2025 trip to Boston for the dedication of the Bill Russell Bridge.

their relationship had never become particularly close Although the two former players had won six NBA championships together.

Karen said she and her brother had not been acknowledged at the event and that security had escorted them to the back of the gym. She added, “He was also hard of hearing at the end of his life, which made it hard for everyone to be in contact with him.” The family dispute surrounding NBA legend Bill Russell has returned to court, more than a decade after his children questioned his care and mental competency. The case ended with a private agreement. Now, Jeannine, who later married Bill, is suing Karen over comments about her father’s health, claiming they violated the terms of that agreement. Shaughnessy drove Karen to Cousy’s home in Worcester, Massachusetts, in October. They largely went their separate ways after their playing careers, and Cousy had spoken openly about regretting that he had not done more to understand the racism Russell experienced in Boston. The meeting also carried a family connection. Cousy’s wife, Missie, had been close to Karen’s mother, Rose Swisher Russell. Karen recalled seeing photographs of her mother at Cousy’s home and spoke about how much the two families had shared over the years. The inscription read, “May The Next Seventy Be As Pleasant As The Last Seven. From The Russells To The Cousys. The conversation then turned to Bill’s health. Ticia Cousy, Bob’s daughter, asked Karen if her father had suffered from dementia. Karen responded, “My dad had well-known cognitive issues.

She also described an incident earlier that year at an event held at McClymonds High School in Oakland, her father’s former school.

The latest lawsuit follows an October 2025 conversation between Karen and former Boston Celtics star Bob Cousy. Jeannine’s legal team argues that Karen had already agreed not to make such statements publicly and received more than $500,000 in consideration under the earlier arrangement. In 2015, they filed a vulnerable adult protection action involving Bill and Jeannine Fiorito, who was then his caregiver and romantic partner. They argued that the 11-time NBA champion was a vulnerable adult and raised concerns about his ability to manage his own affairs. The assessment was later discussed in Gary Pomerantz’s 2018 book, The Last Pass: Cousy, Russell, the Celtics and What Matters in the End. The case went through a 16-month legal process before the parties reached an out-of-court settlement. They remained together until Russell died on July 31, 2022, at the age of 88. The agreement reached in 2015 has now become the centre of another legal dispute between his family members. Jeannine’s current complaint argues that Karen breached those terms by making comments about her father’s cognitive health in a Boston Globe on October 24, 2025. It should not be described as a confirmed $500,000 settlement paid to the entire family. Bill was cleared by a medical professional to make his own decisions in connection with the 2015 vulnerable adult protection action, according to the lawyers. The comments that led to the lawsuit appeared in a Boston Globe column by Dan Shaughnessy on October 24, 2025. Jeannine’s legal team later identified that statement as the alleged breach of the 2015 agreement. Bill Russell’ and Jeannine (Getty Images) Jeannine filed the latest complaint in Seattle Superior Court in Washington, alleging that Karen materially breached the agreements reached after the 2015 case. In a statement reported by the Boston Herald on February 17, 2026, she said, “I can no longer stay silent while my husband’s incredible and unique legacy is tarnished. Russell won 11 NBA championships in 13 seasons with the Boston Celtics, including eight consecutive titles from 1959 to 1966. He earned five NBA MVP awards and became the first Black head coach in NBA history when he took over as Boston’s player-coach in 1966. 6 jersey across the league and named its Finals MVP trophy after him. The new case now centres on the terms of the 2015 agreement and Jeannine’s claim that Karen violated them.

The reported figure refers to what Jeannine’s lawyers say Karen received under the agreement. Karen had not publicly responded to the new lawsuit in the reports available when it was announced. The Boston Herald also reported that it could not reach her for comment at the time.

During their meeting, Karen said her father had “well-known cognitive issues. In a statement released after the new lawsuit was filed, her lawyers said Karen voluntarily accepted “over half a million dollars in consideration” to retract the claim and agree not to make it publicly. More than a decade after the original legal action, the family is once again dealing with a dispute in court, this time over what can be said publicly about Bill Russell’s health and final years.

The dispute began when Karen and Jacob raised concerns about their father’s condition and the people managing his personal affairs. The children alleged that Bill was being isolated from much of his family and that control of his finances had been taken over. Russell had suffered a small stroke that year. During the legal proceedings, a court-assigned guardian, Janet Somers, reportedly described his condition as involving “variable memory and cognitive issues. It did not end with a public trial that resolved every allegation made by the children. Instead, the parties entered into written agreements, including a confidentiality and nondisparagement agreement. A few months after the case ended, Bill and Jeannine married. It established terms concerning what the parties could publicly say about the dispute. The financial details come from Jeannine’s legal team. The legal team also maintains that Karen’s statement was untrue and had not been substantiated in any proceeding. Jeannine’s case rests on the argument that Karen accepted its terms but later made a public statement that went against them. The article followed Karen’s first meeting with Bob Cousy, the former Celtics guard who played alongside her father during Boston’s championship years. The comments appeared in Shaughnessy’s account of the meeting. Her legal team argues that the comments about Bill’s cognitive health violated the confidentiality and nondisparagement terms. The complaint also disputes the suggestion that Russell lacked the ability to make his own decisions. They maintain that Karen’s public statement was not supported by the outcome of those proceedings. Jeannine has framed the lawsuit as an effort to protect the memory of her late husband. She also added, “I have decided to speak out and take action to preserve Bill’s memory in the way he intended. The claims made in the complaint remain allegations, and the new case does not amount to a court finding that Karen breached the agreement. The family dispute comes against the background of one of basketball’s most influential careers. He went on to win two more championships as a coach. His influence also reached beyond the court. Russell was a prominent civil rights advocate who stood alongside Martin Luther King Jr. and spoke against racial discrimination. He faced racist abuse during his time in Boston, including a break-in at his home in Reading.
