The Ravens lost 36-10 and fell to 4-4. Now they host the 5-2 Jacksonville Jaguars on a short week at M&T Bank Stadium, and the biggest question around the team is about their two-time MVP. He came off the bench and went 10 of 21 for 91 yards with an interception. He is only the second undrafted rookie quarterback to start for the Ravens, after Anthony Brown in 2022.

After the loss, the Ravens said Jackson will have surgery and go on injured reserve, which means at least four missed games. Coach Jesse Minter confirmed it Tuesday.

Offensive lineman Roger Rosengarten has said he takes responsibility for the injury. “We’ll be starting Joe at quarterback this week on Thursday,” Minter said. Earlier this week Minter said he was “dealing with some things physically,” though the rookie is still set to go. Kicker Tyler Loop is also headed to injured reserve, Minter said.

Baltimore’s quarterback room came apart in a single afternoon. Jackson had only just returned from a three-week layoff. Here is exactly where Jackson stands right now for Thursday Night Football, and who is under center. No. Lamar Jackson will not play, and his absence will stretch well past one game. He hurt his right thumb on that first snap and never came back. Some reports say his season could be done. Backup Tyler Huntley did not escape either. He left before halftime with a toe injury and was ruled out for Thursday. That leaves Joe Fagnano, an undrafted rookie. “An opportunity we’re fired up about. Excited to play in front of our fans Thursday night against a really good team. Fagnano is not fully healthy either. This time he gets a week of practice as the starter, and Minter has pointed to his preseason work as a reason the team trusts him. Baltimore is trying to avoid a fourth straight loss with a thin roster. Jackson’s surgery is the only settled part of this. Everything else hinges on a rookie’s ankle holding up for four quarters.

Lamar Jackson went down on the Ravens’ first offensive snap against Buffalo on Sunday, and before halftime his backup was hurt too. Fagnano had no warning on Sunday.
