Kolkata: Around 20 stray dogs in New Alipore and adjoining Chetla are set to be moved to animal shelters to protect them from the loud noise of crackers that has been rampant in these neighbourhoods over the last three nights. A group of locals, who regularly feed strays, have taken the initiative to move the animals, who have been left terrified by the loud blasts and flashes of light.
Because animals possess a wider and more acute range of hearing than humans, coupled with their instincts of fear and self-preservation, fireworks can trigger severe physiological and psychological trauma, said a south Kolkata NGO worker who is involved in protecting stray animals. We will start moving as many of them as possible to animal shelters from Saturday morning,” said Bapi Sen, a resident of Buroshibtala who regularly feeds strays in New Alipore. The locals fear some of the strays might even be killed if they remain unprotected. “The animals are scared and have been left distraught by the incessant noise. A few of them have been taken home by some of us but there are many more in the neighbourhood and adjoining localities who are in a terrible state. Two years ago, the group had run a poster campaign in the area, urging citizens to protect animals on the roads and give them shelter during Diwali.
