SRTC plans AI-led bus operations: The wider industry impact

Transport minister Dayashankar Singh said UPSRTC will use AI in bus operation planning system.

Tenders have been invited for the project, which has an estimated cost of around Rs 30 crore. UPSRTC operates 14,300 buses through 120 depots, providing transportation services to over 17 lakh passengers daily.

Minister of state for transport (independent) Dayashankar Singh said that the initiative will enable integrated and scientific planning of bus services across the state. The minister said that the system will strengthen coordination among depots and enable more efficient utilisation of buses. Lucknow: UP State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) has taken a significant step towards modernising public transportation services by introducing an artificial intelligence (AI)-based depot management and bus operations planning system. The project is being proposed under the Intelligent Transport System (ITS) scheme of the Union ministry of road transport and highways (MoRTH). Under the new system, the schedules of all depots will be coordinated through a centralised digital platform. Using AI technology, the system will analyse passenger demand, route utilisation, travel time, and bus availability to determine the optimum number of buses and ideal service frequency for each route. The project will offer several benefits, like more regular and reliable bus services and bus operations based on passenger demand, helping reduce waiting times.
