Protesters said census training was being held at the block and tehsil levels across Bareilly. During lunch break in Aonla, the SDM allegedly approached teachers waiting in a queue for food packets and called them “bhookhe-nange” (hungry and naked) and “dogs”. Mishra later allegedly apologised, but the teachers said they were not satisfied and maintained that their dignity could not be compromised. We are attending training even during Diwali, yet we were insulted,” said Rajesh Kumar, a teacher.

Naresh Gangwar, a leader of Uttar Pradesh Primary Teachers’ Association, demanded that Mishra be attached to the district headquarters with immediate effect and that an impartial inquiry be conducted. Protesters warned that the agitation would continue until action was taken and that census work would be halted across the district if their demands were not met.
