Pilibhit : A court in UP’s Pilibhit has sentenced two brothers, aged 42 and 45 years, to rigorous life imprisonment for murdering the younger brother’s wife in front of her mother and her brother after the victim approached local police for her two missing daughters, aged 17 and 15.

The incident took place on June 3, 2025, at Jallupur in Pilibhit’s Gunghchai area. Nanhi Devi, 38, had barely walked 500m from her husband Akhilesh Mishra ’s house when the latter along with his elder brother, Arvind Mishra, repeatedly stabbed her with a sharp-edged object. An FIR was registered the same day under BNS 103 (1) (murder) and 3(5) (criminal acts committed by several persons) following a complaint by the woman’s brother, Rajnish Kumar , who also witnessed the crime. A chargesheet was filed on July 29, and the object used to kill her was recovered. The complainant told TOI that his sister’s two daughters had gone missing 20 days before the murder, but his brother-in-law didn’t want to inform police.

She died on the spot. Both the accused were arrested. The cops later found the girls; one is now married, while the younger one lives with her maternal uncle, he added.

It also imposed a Rs 50,000 penalty on each convict, and directed that half the amount be paid to the victim’s mother.
