At least five people were killed and more than a dozen injured in a shooting at a market square

At least six people were killed and 15 wounded after a gunman opened fire in a busy market square in Krakow, Poland’s second-largest city, on Saturday, authorities said.

Gunman shot during exchange of fire with police

The shooter is a Polish national, according to police, as reported by local news outlet Onet.

Katarzyna Cisło, a Krakow Police spokesperson, told local broadcaster TVN24 that the perpetrator was wearing military-style fatigues and carrying a military-type long gun. The perpetrator targeted random people while driving into the Main Square, a major tourist destination in Krakow’s city centre. Police officers were also among the wounded. “The man had no identification documents with him. The police were able to establish his identity through operational work,” the website quoted a police officer as saying. The gunman was shot and wounded during an exchange of fire with officers a short distance from the site of the initial shooting. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk wrote on X that police were investigating the attack. President Karol Nawrocki expressed solidarity with the victims, the injured and their families.
