Kanpur: Cyber criminals allegedly hacked a liquor trader’s email account and cheated him of Rs 1 crore after providing details of a mule account opened using a fake address and Aadhaar card in South Delhi . On October 8, Lalwani received an email seeking a pending payment and providing details of an Axis Bank account in New Delhi, different from the account used earlier. On November 3, a company representative called Lalwani and asked him to make the payment. Lalwani transferred Rs 1 crore through RTGS to the account provided.

Goods are ordered and payments confirmed through official email accounts. Ashish Lalwani, a Ratanlal Nagar resident, said his company, Rajasthan Liquors Limited, has an office in Tilak Nagar and a longstanding business partnership with KLA Construction Technology Private Limited. He contacted the company director Anurag Jindal on WhatsApp and was told that the account had been changed. Police station in-charge Abhay Pratap Singh said the money had been transferred to a savings account belonging to a person in South Delhi’s Hauz Khas area, rather than a firm’s account.

A case has been registered at the cyber crime police station. When he later reconfirmed the transaction with the director, he learnt that the money had not reached the company’s account. After Lalwani shared the account number, the director denied that it belonged to the company. Police suspect it was used as a mule account. The account had been opened using a fake Aadhaar card, while the mobile number linked to it was active in Nagaland. Police have emailed the bank seeking to freeze the account and are investigating.
