Vijayapura : A bird census conducted to mark Karnataka Rajyotsava has recorded 267 bird species in the Krishna River basin across Vijayapura and Bagalkot districts. More than 20,000 birds were sighted at Almatti backwaters, Benal, Chimmalagi, Herakal and other locations. “A few of us had earlier documented over 250 species. Praveen Baddi, RFO, Social Forestry, Mudhol, said the census was part of a statewide exercise conducted from Oct 30 to Nov 2 to mark Karnataka Rajyotsava.
This census has recorded the highest number of species so far and updated the data on the eBird platform, which maintains global bird records,” he said.
Hanamant Doni, range forest officer (RFO), Mudhol, told TOI that the census has produced the most comprehensive bird database available for the region. Bird enthusiast and govt school teacher Chandru Kolekar said such surveys are increasingly important in the context of climate change. Birds play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance,” he said.
Herakal barrage is emerging as a major hotspot for migratory birds, while bird enthusiasts expect Almatti backwaters to attract more migratory species this season as water levels have receded. Bird enthusiasts from various backgrounds participated in the survey at different locations. The exercise aimed to gather scientific data on bird species, habitats, migratory patterns and breeding activity. No new or rare species were recorded during the exercise. “Changing weather patterns and habitat loss are affecting bird populations and migration routes. Systematic documentation helps researchers track these changes and assess species status.
