Pune: A 45-year-old transport operator from Pimple Gurav was allegedly cheated of Rs 99 lakh by five people who promised to secure him a transport contract with an automotive company. The Sangvi police registered a case against the suspects on Saturday.
They demanded a deposit of Rs 1 crore, asking the complainant to place the money with a credit cooperative society in Thane. The Sangvi police have registered a case under sections 316 (criminal breach of trust), 318 (cheating), 336 (forgery) and 338 (forgery of valuable security) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
The complainant, a resident of Dapodi who runs a transport business with an office in Pimple Gurav, told police that two men from Pandharpur in Solapur district approached him in April with the offer. An officer from the Sangvi police said the duo promised to secure a contract with a company whose dealerships cover several major automobile brands. The fraud took place between April and Nov. When the promised contract did not materialise, the complainant approached the society to withdraw his deposit. He was shocked to learn that the money had already been withdrawn, despite his possession of the original deposit receipts. He then approached the police.
“The investigation so far has revealed that the accused prepared fake documents to withdraw the complainant’s money,” the officer said.
