Lucknow police have filed a First Information Report (FIR) against two unidentified women and another unidentified individual following the emergence of a video on social media. The footage allegedly depicts the individuals pouring water and chanting religious slogans at the main entrance of a mosque located in the Chowk area of Lucknow. The investigation is ongoing as authorities seek to identify those involved.
The FIR was lodged at Chowk police station on Tuesday under Section 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police said the video came to their notice on Aug 24.
The police said the ownership, possession and religious character of the disputed site are currently under court proceedings and that a status quo order is in force. Police said they would secure and examine the video and other electronic evidence, identify those involved and review the dissemination of the footage on social media as part of the investigation. It was registered on the basis of a written complaint by sub-inspector Vivek Singh , in charge of the Rumi Gate police outpost. The footage purportedly shows two women at the mosque’s main entrance pouring water from a plastic bottle while raising religious slogans. The complaint also states that another person is seen recording the act. Describing the location as sensitive from a communal and law-and-order perspective, the complaint notes that the act and the recording and circulation of the video could create tension, disharmony or hostility between communities and affect public peace.
