Kochi : The railway protection force (RPF) seized over 13kg of ganja found abandoned on a platform following the search of Train No 06052 (Mangaluru–Kollam Express) at Ernakulam North railway station on Tuesday.
As part of the Onam checks, the RPF seized 14.17 litres of unclaimed foreign liquor at stations in Ernakulam and Thrissur in the previous weeks as well. On Aug 16, 10.75 litres of liquor, comprising 11 bottles valued at Rs 17,700, was found on a platform at Ernakulam South railway station and handed over to the govt railway police. On Aug 15, the RPF recovered 3.42 litres of liquor from Thrissur railway station during an inspection of the Dhanbad Express. The bottles, valued at Rs 6,650, were handed over to Thrissur excise authorities.

Efforts are on to trace those who smuggled it till Kochi, said sources. The seizure was made during special inspections aboard trains and at railway stations ahead of Onam. The special inspections were being carried out as per the instructions of senior divisional security commissioner Mohammed Haneef. The operation was conducted under the supervision of RPF crime intelligence inspector Jipin A J. RPF SI Praise Mathew, ASIs Sijo and Vijayakumar, and constable Manoj were part of the team. The RPF seized 3kg of ganja on Monday as well and handed it over to Chengannur excise authorities.
