HC stays lawyer's detention under PASA

Senior counsel Yatin Oza, appearing with advocate Samir Khan for Selot, submitted that the petitioner was a practising advocate in Porbandar for over 12 years and served a couple of NGOs as well. He is facing FIRs, along with others, following a fight between two sides over registration of marriage of an interfaith couple. Though he was granted regular bail, local police in Porbandar indicated that he would be booked under PASA on the basis of the two FIRs filed against him.

Ahmedabad: Gujarat High Court on Tuesday restrained authorities from taking coercive action under PASA against advocate Akbar Selot of Porbandar.

Further hearing was posted for Sep 22. After hearing the case, the HC bench asked the govt lawyer to inquire whether the authorities concerned have initiated any PASA proceedings against the lawyer. HC stayed his detention While admitting Selot’s petition. It ordered, “The authorities are restrained from taking any coercive action against the petitioner by way of preventive detention under the PASA Act till further order.
