Delhi man held for fake Instagram profiles, obscene messages — 'New account, relentless harassment'

A 27-year-old man was arrested for creating fake Instagram accounts using a woman’s details

NEW DELHI: A 27-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly creating multiple fake Instagram accounts in a woman’s name and photographs and using them to send obscene material to her husband and acquaintances. Police said Kumar knew the woman and had allegedly been following her since 2022. The accused, identified as Jeetu Kumar, a resident of New Ashok Nagar, allegedly continued the harassment by creating new accounts whenever earlier ones were reported and taken down, causing prolonged mental distress to the woman, police said. A case was registered at the Cyber Police Station of Delhi’s North-East district following the woman’s complaint that an unknown person was harassing and mentally torturing her through social media, news agency ANI reported.

During the investigation, police obtained registration details of the suspected Instagram accounts from Meta and conducted a technical analysis. Acting on the technical leads, a police team conducted raids and apprehended him. Police also recovered a mobile phone allegedly used in the offence from his possession.
