Kolkata: In the six days since the fire, the team carrying out a fire and safety audit of hotels, guest houses and lodges in Kolkata have been able to examine less than 10% of the 4,000-odd hotels that are under the scanner. Closure notices have been served to over 200 hotels for non-compliance with fire safety norms and breaching building rules. Reeling under the blow, the Calcutta Hotel & Restaurant Owners Association, an umbrella body representing budget hotels, has written to CM Suvendu Adhikari and appealed for some time to set its house in order.
Civic officials said the govt was in no mood to take the foot off the pedal just yet and was set to continuing the drive against errant hotel owners. “Hotels in and around New Market, including Mirza Ghalib Street, Lindsay Street, Collin Lane, Sudder Street, Marquis Street and Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road, have stopped taking bookings to avoid the ignominy of asking guests to leave at short notice,” said Calcutta Hotel & Restaurant Owners Association president Rajesh Sethi. But they also conceded that at the current pace, it could take months for the team to complete the checks. Among those that are particularly under the scanner are those that have converted residential buildings into commercial ones and made unauthorized alterations and additions to building.
