Former professional wrestler and public figure The Great Khali has joined relief efforts for flood-affected families in Sivasagar, Assam, lending his support to a rehabilitation initiative aimed at helping communities recover beyond the immediate aftermath of the floods.
The relief programme, being carried out by Jodhpur-based TrueHope Foundation with local partners and individuals including Deepalina Deka and Ayan for Assam, includes plans to construct 100 houses for 100 flood-affected families. The programme also includes the distribution of 500 beds, 500 mattresses, 1,000 pillows, 500 fans and 500 water filters, along with ration kits and other household essentials.
If we cannot come forward to serve another human being, then being a celebrity has little meaning,” Khali said, emphasising the need for collective action during a crisis. Khali said he was impressed by the scale of the housing effort and the focus on providing families with basic necessities. “When people come together with a genuine intention to help, it can make a meaningful difference to families trying to rebuild their lives,” he said. Kuldeep Khatri, Co-founder of TrueHope Foundation, said the relief work would extend beyond Assam.
During his visit to the state, Khali urged celebrities and public figures across the country to contribute to relief efforts in Assam, calling on them to use their influence and resources to support affected communities. “Before we are celebrities, we are human beings. The focus on permanent housing reflects an effort to move from immediate emergency assistance towards longer-term rehabilitation. The team, along with Khali, is also expected to travel to Odisha to assess the needs of flood-affected communities and provide assistance based on local requirements. Khali also spoke about his connection with rural communities and his experience of meeting people in Assam, saying his visit was intended to draw greater attention to the challenges faced by families recovering from the floods.
As supplies continue to reach affected households, the wider effort is seeking to combine immediate support with rehabilitation, particularly through permanent homes. Organisers hope the participation of public figures will encourage more individuals and organisations to contribute to the recovery of flood-affected communities.
