Google Maps uses a blue dot to show your current location. But the size of the blue circle surrounding it can also reveal how accurately the app has identified your location. If you’ve noticed the blue dot expanding and shrinking while using the app, it is not a glitch. Instead, it indicates how confident Google Maps is in your exact location based on the signals your phone receives. Several factors can reduce location accuracy. Entering buildings, travelling underground or moving through areas surrounded by tall buildings can block or weaken GPS signals, making it harder for Google Maps to determine your exact position. If the blue circle remains large, there are a few ways to improve accuracy: Turn on Wi-Fi, even if you are not connected to a network. Google Maps can use nearby Wi-Fi routers to refine your location. Recalibrate your phone’s compass by moving the device in a figure-eight motion through the air. This helps the phone realign its sensors, improving directional accuracy. Move to an open area where your device has a clearer view of GPS satellites, if possible. If the phone gets better location data and the compass is calibrated, the large blue circle may shrink to a smaller one, indicating that Google Maps has a better estimate of your current location. As Google Maps explains through its visual indicator, a large circle essentially means, “You are somewhere inside this general zone, but we aren’t precisely sure where. ” The circle may become larger when GPS signals are affected by environmental conditions or when the phone has fewer sources available to verify its location. This happens as the app determines your location using a combination of GPS satellites, nearby Wi-Fi networks and cellular towers. When these signals are strong and consistent, Google Maps can pinpoint your position more accurately. If the signals are weak or obstructed, the app displays a larger blue circle around the dot to represent the possible margin of error. A small blue circle around the location marker generally indicates that Google Maps has identified your position with greater accuracy. However, a larger circle indicates the app estimates you are somewhere within the highlighted area rather than at a precise point.
