Rockstar Games has responded to the GTA 6 leaks for the first time, calling them heartbreaking for the team.
Rockstar Games has finally said something about the Grand Theft Auto 6 leaks, and it is not the legal thunderclap most people were bracing for. There is no naming of the leaker, no talk of subpoenas, and no suggestion that the November 19 release date is shifting. Around 15 clips have surfaced since, showing protagonist Jason Duval driving through Rockstar’s fictional Miami, getting into a knife fight, cycling through radio stations and taking a propeller plane over the city. The clips are impressive and generic in equal measure, a reminder that GTA 6 mostly looks like a very expensive Grand Theft Auto game. After the 2022 Lapsus$ hack, Rockstar scrapped remote work entirely and pulled developers back to their desks five days a week so builds could not leave the office. The extended look at Grand Theft Auto 6 streams exclusively on Netflix on August 27 at 3PM ET, which is 12:30am IST on August 28. In a letter posted to its social channels on Wednesday, the studio called the past week “heartbreaking for our team” and said this was never how it wanted anyone to see the game. Rockstar told fans it was sorry for how long everything has taken, from finishing the game to putting out official gameplay to answering the questions the community has been shouting into the void. Hearing it apologise for that silence, one day before its Netflix reveal, says something about how much ground the leaker covered first. Bloomberg reports that Rockstar has not identified the leaker or worked out how the breach happened, though it is “all hands on deck” internally. Rockstar says it is not changing its marketing plans, and the Netflix slot goes ahead as scheduled.
What stands out is the apology sitting in the middle of it. This is a studio that treats silence as a marketing tool. The leaks began roughly a week ago, credited to a person or group calling itself CyberLeek. In one clip he shoots the word LEEK into a wall, which tells you the source had a working build rather than a folder of pre-rendered video. Every clip carries an advertisement for a memecoin the leaker minted for the occasion. The footage itself is not especially revealing, which makes Rockstar’s line about spoilers a curious one. Fans have spent the week marvelling at crowd density on a beach and inside a nightclub, and at a store selling physical discs, rather than at any plot beat. No mission, no story turn, no character reveal has surfaced. Take-Two’s lawyers have moved to subpoena records from Microsoft and Discord. The part that must sting inside the studio is the history. Four years and one deeply unpopular return-to-office mandate later, footage walked out anyway. None of this has moved the schedule. Rockstar admits the presentation took longer to assemble than it wanted, and frames it as something that has to clear a very high bar. The open question is what Thursday’s presentation looks like now that a reasonable chunk of the game has been seen without permission.
