TMC Jalpaiguri civic chief voted out after Ritabrata meet

Saikat has been facing criticism within his board since he met rebel Trinamool neta Ritabrata Banerjee recently. Jalpaiguri: Jalpaiguri Municipality chairman Saikat Chatterjee resigned on Thursday after losing a no-confidence motion brought against him by councillors from his own party.

Chatterjee received one vote while 16 voted against him. On July 30, nine TMC councillors – known to be Mamata Banerjee loyalists – had written to Jalpaiguri Sadar SDO, introducing a no-confidence motion against Chatterjee. In the 2022 municipal elections, Chatterjee drew widespread criticism over alleged rigging.

Two Congress councillors and the sole CPM councillor abstained from voting, while three Trinamool councillors were absent. Vice-chairman Sandip Mahato had refused to continue in his post after Chatterjee allegedly refused to assign any department to him.
