The contractor (37) found hanging in his Navi Mumbai residence on Tuesday evening had around Rs2 crore pending with the PWD, Mumbai region.
Representative of the engineers’ association Milind Bhosale told TOI that contractors had been demanding the payment of dues over the past several years. He had allegedly corresponded with the executive engineer concerned repeatedly seeking release of payments. NCP (SP)’s Rohit Pawar alleged in a social media post that delayed payments had pushed contractors towards extreme distress. He demanded accountability and urged contractors not to resort to suicide. He appealed to them to unite and pursue their demands through protests.
Pune: Associations of contractors and engineers have threatened a statewide agitation if the state govt failed to act within eight days against the officials allegedly responsible for a contractor’s death by suicide on Tuesday over delayed payments. The Maharashtra State Contractors’ Federation and State Engineers’ Association, in a letter on Wednesday to chief minister Devendra Fadnavis , public works department (PWD) minister and senior officials, said contractors across the state had around Rs86 crore pending with various government departments for several years.
Because of the prolonged delay in payment, he allegedly faced severe financial and mental distress.
The associations said the financial pressure had taken a heavy toll on him. The representatives of contractors’ and engineers’ associations alleged that the deceased contractor was subjected to humiliating treatment over his correspondence for the payment of dues.

Bhosale, the representative of the engineers’ association, said, “We have repeatedly sought intervention from the state govt and the PWD in payment of contractors’ dues. They even gave us a hearing, but there was no outcome,” he said. The police have registered an accidental death case,” the letter of the associations stated. The contractors’ organisation enclosed with their representation a letter the deceased wrote before his death. It allegedly highlighted the problems he faced. Download the TOI App.
