Ahmedabad: Recalling the 11 ‘sutras’ that Mahatma Gandhi propagated, Union home minister Amit Shah on Thursday said that Gandhi had described religious conversion as a form of sin and advocated for people to live according to their own faith. He added, “This is an important and invaluable day for 900 graduating students, but it is an even more important day for me. Stating that khadi has become hugely popular over the past 12 years, Shah said that if one reads Gandhi’s writings, he has not used the word ‘navnirman’ but has used ‘punah nirmaan’. As many as 900 students graduated in different disciplines and 11 were awarded gold medals for excelling at academics and cultural events.

“Gandhiji had described religious conversion as a form of sin and you have pledged to live according to ‘swadharma’ (your own faith or inner calling),” Shah said. “From the time I was very young, I have been an admirer of Pujya Bapuji and in a way a follower as well,” Shah told graduating students of the Gandhian institution. My mother made me take a vow to wear khadi for the rest of my life,” Shah said amid a huge round of applause from students. Shah said that Gandhi was the founder of the Vidyapith, and leaders like Sardar Patel, Rajendra Babu and Morarji Desai have headed the institution. “After a long time, Vidyapith has begun to follow the path shown by Gandhi,” he commented, adding that everyone should try and keep away from the seven sins listed by Mahatma Gandhi and follow the 11 virtues listed by him in his writings. The principles will remain the same as those that have existed for thousands of years,” he said. ICT student Krisha Patel, who secured two gold medals for academic and cultural activities at the convocation, said she aims to use her education at Gujarat Vidyapith to serve society.

He said that he has extensively read about the lives and writings of several great persons and made an attempt to imbibe their values. “But after such extensive reading, I can say that Gandhi’s message will be as relevant for the next 100 years as it was when he was alive.”
