For a quarterback who has played in three consecutive Super Bowls and won two of them, the metric that mattered most during recovery was not spiral tightness or 40 times. On July 25, Brittany shared Chiefs training camp footage on her Instagram Stories with a simple caption: “Seeing him back doing what he loves. He is targeting a Week 1 start when Kansas City opens against Denver on September 14.

Coach Andy Reid held him back due to the knee, and the Rams won 20-12.

“The kids understand that dad can’t necessarily be the dad that I usually am throwing them around the couches and stuff like that,” he told reporters in January. “Honestly, the toughest part was at the beginning, not being able to get up and chase my kids around,” he said at training camp. ” That kind of honesty says something. “I feel stronger than I’ve ever felt, as far as strength and lifting,” he told reporters.

Patrick Mahomes acknowledged early in his rehab that the injury had changed his role at home. “I know it sounds crazy, but being a dad and being active, I always want to be around my kids and playing and stuff like that. That was tough. But once I was able to do that, it kinda motivated me to keep getting better and better. So, when Bronze has a T-ball game, or Sterling is playing soccer, I can be out there with them. It was getting back to a T-ball game. Patrick did not play in that game. But his family was there on the sideline, which given how this offseason unfolded, meant something more than a routine preseason appearance. So thankful. No lengthy tribute, no dramatic statement. Just relief. Mahomes, for his part, arrived at training camp with the kind of confidence that comes from months of unglamorous work. “I feel amazing. The Chiefs will go as far as Mahomes can carry them this season. But the past eight months made one thing clear: the person who kept the other side of his life together while he was staring at cinderblock walls and doing slow, methodical knee bends did not get nearly enough attention.
