The Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety has issued clearance for Metro 4 and 4A rolling stock
MUMBAI: The Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) has given the safety clearance for the rolling stock of Metro 4 and 4A, taking the corridors a step closer to opening after the other mandatory safety certifications are secured. The rakes procured specifically for Metro 4 and 4A, however, are yet to arrive. In the interim, trains currently stationed at the Charkop car depot and being used on Metro 2A, 7 and 9 will be deployed on the new corridor. In February 2025, MMRDA awarded contracts for rolling stock and signalling to Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and Alstom. The companies are to supply 39 driverless six-car trainsets, comprising 234 coaches. The rakes being considered for the initial operations were manufactured by BEML (Bharat Earth Movers Limited) for Metro 2A, 7 and 9 under the Make in India initiative. The CMRS clearance for their deployment on Metro 4 and 4A was sought on the basis of the earlier clearance granted to the BEML rakes for operations in Mumbai’s western suburbs. METRO 4 — ENTIRE CORRIDOR Corridor: Wadala, Ghatkopar, Kasarvadavali, Gaimukh Total length: 35.2 km Metro 4: Wadala, Ghatkopar, Kasarvadavali, 32.32 km Metro 4A: Kasarvadavali, Gaimukh, 2.88 km PHASE I — GAIMUKH–CADBURY JUNCTION Length: 10.5 km Stations: 10 Stations: Cadbury Junction, Majiwada, Kapurbawdi, Manpada, Tikuji-ni-wadi, Dongripada, Vijay Garden, Kasarvadavali, Govaniwada, Gaimukh Trial runs: Flagged off on September 22, 2025 Initial trial section: Gaimukh, Govaniwada, Kasarvadavali, Vijay Garden DEPOT & OPERATIONS Depot: Mogharpada, along Ghodbunder Road, Thane Interim arrangement: Gaimukh will facilitate initial operations and rake servicing until the Mogharpada depot is ready.

The clearance has been issued to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Limited (MMMOCL). The two lines could also become the first metro corridor in Mumbai to begin operations without a dedicated car depot, until the planned depot is ready. To service the first phase, six rakes will be deployed to ferry passengers. Gaimukh metro station and the section beyond it will be used for stabling and maintaining the trains. A pit has been created at Gaimukh for this purpose. The station has two island platforms and four lines, with two earmarked for passenger operations and the other two for servicing the rakes. These trainsets are yet to be delivered. Once delivered, they will require fresh CMRS certification before being inducted into passenger service.
