He cautioned that 70-80% of jobs could undergo structural changes over the next 1,000 days. Acknowledging farmers’ agitations as a reflection of unrewarded hard work, he said govt efforts were constrained by the fact that nearly 80% of Maharashtra’s farmers were marginal landholders, making mechanisation difficult and increasing input costs. Inaugurating the SPPU Nashik sub-centre, Fadnavis said the city had lost some of its industrial edge during the first decade of the millennium due to various hurdles, with investments shifting to Pune and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.
“Nashik has regained momentum over the past decade and is now positioned to become Maharashtra’s next growth engine after Mumbai and Pune,” the CM said. He said the development of Vadhavan Port and proposed transport corridors linking Nashik to the port would strengthen the city’s position as a hub for engineering, logistics and exports. Highlighting rapid technological changes, the CM said artificial intelligence and data science had replaced the dotcom boom as key drivers of the global economy. “The sub-centre should focus on emerging fields such as data science, AI in healthcare and clinical data management,” Fadnavis said. “SPPU has initiated work and govt will provide full support to ensure the next major breakthrough or unicorn startup originating from this university and its Nashik sub-centre,” he said.
The CM stressed that universities must evolve into incubation hubs for innovation and entrepreneurship, noting that global technology giants like Google emerged from academic ecosystems rather than industrial estates. Addressing speculation over a possible renaming of the facility, Fadnavis clarified that the Nashik sub-centre would continue to bear the name of Krantijyoti Savitribai Phule. The statement came after senior cabinet minister Chhagan Bhujbal raised concerns about a potential name change. “This is where agricultural colleges play an important role. They can innovate to reduce inputs and improve production without compromising quality, quantity, or soil and water health,” Fadnavis added.
