Residents said the damaged covers, located almost at road level, are difficult to spot, especially after dark. They said covers at two locations had collapsed, leaving deep openings along the roadside. However, residents said permanent repairs are urgently required, as the makeshift arrangement offers little protection. With the drains almost flush with the road surface, the damaged portions are difficult for motorists to notice, particularly at night or during rain,” said Akhilesh Kumar, a local resident. “If an SUV can get stuck here, think about what will happen to a two-wheeler rider or a pedestrian,” said local Deepak Gupta. A senior NMC official told TOI that a team would be sent to inspect the site and that the broken drain covers would be promptly replaced.
Recently, an SUV got stuck in one of the openings late at night, highlighting the risk to motorists. A visit by TOI to the spot showed the damaged drain covers surrounded by broken concrete, mud, leaves, garbage and construction debris. Plastic barricades have been placed over the openings as a temporary warning for motorists. “The concrete slabs covering the drains have given way, leaving wide openings close to the carriageway. He added that motorists often swerve onto the drain covers to avoid potholes on the road, increasing the risk of the covers giving way further. Over time, the exposed drains have accumulated additional plastic waste, adding to the debris already scattered around them. Broken pieces of the drain covers and chunks of concrete lie strewn across the spots, leaving uneven surfaces and making it difficult for pedestrians to walk safely along the edge of the road.
